Construction of the St. Stephen’s Basilica of Budapest began in 1851. The first architect was József Hild, whose design reflected the style of Neoclassicism. In 1867 Hild died, then Miklós Ybl continued. As a result of his work some parts were replaced with Neorenaissance elements. The statues on the facade were made by Leo Fessler, Ede Mayer and Béla Brestyánszky. - After death of Ybl in 1891, architect Jozsef Kauser called well-known Hungarian sculptors and painters to design the decoration inside the church. - The Basilica is named after Saint Stephen I, the first Christian King of Hungary, whose right hand is housed in the reliquary. With the height of 96 metres, equal with the Hungarian Parliament building, it is one of the two tallest buildings in Budapest. The church was consecrated in 1905. - Read on the facade: EGO SUM VIA VERITAS ET VITA := I am the way, the truth and the life. • Pest városának tanácsa 1845-ben felkérte Hild Józsefet, a klasszicista építészet nagy mesterét a lipótvárosi templom terveinek elkészítésére. A szabadságharc miatt az építkezés csak 1851-ben kezdődött el. - Hild 1867-ben bekövetkezett halála után Ybl Miklós folytatta a munkát és egyes részeket neoreneszánsz stílusban áttervezett. - A homlokzati szobrokat Fessler Leo készítette. Ybl Miklós 1891-ben meghalt, őt Kauser József követte, aki a belső terek kialakításával fejezte be a Szent István Bazilika építését. Ehhez a munkához számos szobrászt és festőt hívott. - Ugyanebben az évben volt a templom felszentelése. A 96 méter magas templom Magyarország egyik legfontosabb egyházi épülete. Szent István épségben maradt jobb kezét, a Szent Jobbot ereklyeként itt őrzik. - EGO SUM VIA VERITAS ET VITA := Én vagyok az út, az igazság és az élet – olvasható a homlokzaton. |
