This is really a unique place to walk along the houses with wooden gables and balconies, and steep roofs. The house on the left is one of the most characteristic buildings of the Kós Károly square in the Wekerle estate (Wekerletelep). On the right we can see the St. Joseph’s catholic church. The estate was named after Sándor Wekerle, Hungarian prime minister at the turn of the 19-20th century, who supported the idea of establishing comfortable, human-scale housing estates to solve the accommodation problems of government employees: workers and clerks. - The main square was built according to the design of the young and already famous architect Károly Kós. His friend and colleague Dezső Zrumeczky and other talented artists were also involved. Wekerletelep was built between 1908 and 1926. • A kép baloldalán álló ház (Kós Károly tér 14.) Wekerletelep főterének egyik legjellegzetesebb épülete. A jobboldalon a Wekerlei Munkás Szent József-templom látható. A különleges karakterű és hangulatú városrész létrehozása 1908-ban kezdődött elWekerle Sándor háromszoros miniszterelnök (egy ideig pénzügyminiszter) kezdeményezésére, főként munkások és állami hivatalnokok lakásgondjainak megoldására. Angol hatásra született, a kertvárosépítés egyik legsikeresebb példájának számít a kontinensen. A telep megtervezésénél különös hangsúlyt fektettek a központi térre, amire külön pályázatot hirdettek meg. Ezt Kós Károly, az Erdélyből jött fiatal, de már jól ismert polihisztor-építész nyerte meg, aki bevonta a munkákba barátját, pályatársát, Zrumeczky Dezsőt és más fiatal, tehetséges építészeket is. 1987-től a teret Kós Károly térnek hívják. |
