Hungarian Parliament building, Kossuth L. sq, architect: Imre Steindl - Hungary Culture Photography

On a sunny late autumn day, during my photowalking to the Museum of Ethnography, I passed through Kossuth Lajos square, where I saw an impressive sight. On the middle left we can see Francis II Rákóczi’s equestrian statue. The Parliament of Hungary is hosted in the world’s third largest Parliament building. It was built in Gothic Revival (neo-Gothic) style, according to the plans of Imre Steindl drawing inspiration from London’s Houses of Parliament. About 100,000 people were involved in construction, 40 million bricks and 40 kilograms of gold were used. The grand dome reaches a height of 96 meters. The building was inaugurated in the year of the Millennium in 1896. Unfortunately, the architect did not live to see the Parliament completed (1904), because he died in 1902. • Egy késő őszi napon a Néprajzi Múzeum felé sétálva átmentem a Kossuth téren, ahol impozáns látványban volt részem. Balközépen II. Rákóczi Ferenc gránit talapzaton álló lovasszobra látható, mely Pásztor Jánost dicséri. A Magyar Országház épülete 1885-1904 épült fel Steindl Imre építész, műegyetemi tanár tervei szerint. Az épület külső megjelenésében az 1830-as évek Angliájában kibontakozó ‘Gothic Revival’ (neogótikus) irányzathoz köthető. Az Országház egészére leginkább az ún. historizáló eklektika jellemző, melyben a neogótikus elemek dominálnak, de helyenként barokk és reneszánsz vonások is fellelhetők. - A tervező Steindl Imre, a 19. század kiemelkedő építésze élete fő művének teljes befejezését (1904) már nem érhette meg, mert 1902-ben meghalt.
