Eger Cathedral - Egri Bazilika, Hild József, klasszicista - Hungary Culture Photography

Eger Cathedral – officially: Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle – was built at the order of Archbishop János László Pyrker in Classicist style between 1831 and 1837. The plans were prepared by famous Hungarian architect József Hild. - Archbishop Pyrker invited a young, talented sculptor from Venice, Marco Casagrande, to make the statues of the Basilica. The huge sculpture standing next to the staircase: Hungarian kings St. Stephen (on the left of the photo) and St. Ladislaus are in the first line, and behind them Apostles Peter and Paul. The tympan is supported by Corinthian columns with Latin inscript on it: ‘VENITE ADOREMUS DOMINUM’ : ‘Come and Let us Adore Lord!’. The statues of Faith-Hope-Love standing above the vestibule, on the top of the facade, are also Casagrande’s works, just like the angel statues of Love of God and Truth of God next to the tympan. - Eger is the county seat of Heves, and the second largest city in Northern Hungary. Beyond the Cathedral it is best known for its castle, buildings, thermal baths and red wines. The town is located on the hills of the Bükk Mountains. ⛳ Pyrker János László egri érsek (1772 – 1847) eltökélt szándéka volt, hogy méltó templom épüljön Eger számára. 1831 és 1837 között – Hild József tervei alapján klasszicista stílusban – épült az Egri Főszékesegyház (Bazilika), Magyarország második legnagyobb temploma. A szobrokat, domborműveket az érsek által Magyarországra hívott fiatal, tehetséges olasz szobrász, Marco Casagrande készítette. A kép jobb oldalán elől Szent László király, mögötte Szent Pál szobra áll. A bal oldalon az elől lévő szobor Szent István királynak állít emléket, míg a hátsó Szent Pétert ábrázolja. A homlokzat tetején a ‘Hit-Remény-Szeretet’ hármas csoport látható. A timpanon mellett két oldalon áll az Isteni Igazság és Szeretet angyalpárosa. - A templom ünnepélyes felszentelése 1837. május 6–7-én volt. Az oltárok kialakítása, a freskók festése még sok éven át tartott. A homlokzaton lévő felirat: ‘VENITE ADOREMUS DOMINUM’ : ‘Jöjjetek, imádjuk az Urat!’ - Eger városa a Bükk-vidék délnyugati szélén fekszik. A város kiemelkedő turisztikai vonzereje a Bazilikán kívül az Egri Vár és a Szépasszonyvölgy.
