Eger Cathedral, Classicism, architect: József Hild - Egri Bazilika - Hungary Culture Photography

Upon his arrival in Eger, having being appointed Archbishop in 1827, János László Pyrker said: ‘The archbishop church of Eger is hardly different from any church in an ordinary village’. He wanted Eger to have a decent church: a cathedral. Based on the design by famous architect József Hild, the work of building started in 1831. The Archbishop invited the young sculptor Marco Casagrande from Italy to make statues alongside the stairs of the cathedral, opposite the Lyceum (now Eszterházy Károly University). The cathedral built in the style of Classicism was consecrated in 1837. (In Western Europe, this style is usually referred to as ‘NeoClassicism’.) - Decorating the internal space, constructing the altars, painting the frescoes took additional more than one hundred years. The cathedral has an altar dedicated to Saint Michael, the patron of the parish and the city of Eger, and another one to Saint John the apostle and evangelist, the patron of the diocese. ⛳ Az egri Szent Mihály- és Szent János főszékesegyházban vagyunk. A grandiózus méretű katedrális megépítése alapvetően Pyrker János László érseknek köszönhető, akit I. Ferenc császár 1827-ben nevezett ki az Egri Főegyházmegye élére. Pyrker kinevezését követően rögtön kezdeményezte, hogy Egernek a városhoz méltó temploma legyen. A magyarországi klasszicista építészet nagy mesterét, Hild Józsefet bízta meg a bazilika megtervezésével. Az építkezés 1831-ben kezdődött és az ünnepélyes felszentelésre 1837-ben került sor. - A belső díszítések, az oltárok kialakítása, valamint a mennyezeti freskók elkészítése több mint száz évig tartott még. A mennyezeti freskók Takács István mezőkövesdi templomfestőt dicsérik (1949–1950). A Bazilika az 1950-es évekre készült el teljesen.
