Szent Erzsébet templom Rózsák terén - Neo-Gothic Church, Imre Steindl - Hungary Culture Photography

We are standing in the Square of Roses in Elisabeth Town (Erzsébetváros), Budapest 7th district. The Church of St. Elizabeth of the House of Árpád, the largest church of the district was built according to the design by the famous architect Imre Steindl in neo-Gothic style. The length of the grandiose building is 62 m. (Steindl is also credited to building the Hungarian Parliament.) - The church was dedicated to the memory of St. Elizabeth of Hungary (1207–1231), who was the daughter of King Andrew II and Gertrude of Merania. After her short life Elizabeth became soon a symbol of Christian charity. Only 4 years after her death (at the age of 24) she was canonized in 1235. - At the time this church was built the place was called ‘Szegényház tér’ (Poorhouse square). ⛳ A Rózsák terén járunk, Erzsébetvárosban, Budapest VII. kerületében. - A templom arculatának kialakításakor Steindl Imre a gótika francia hagyományaiból indult ki, ugyanakkor korának modern technikai megoldásait is hatásosan alkalmazta. A híres építész középiskolai tanulmányait a Eötvös Gimnázium elődjében, a Pesti Főreáliskolában végezte. Budapesten körülbelül ezer épületet terveztek azok az építészek, akik a Pesti Főreáliskolában végezték középfokú tanulmányaikat. Steindl Imrén kívül idejárt Alpár Ignác (Magyar Nemzeti Bank), Giergl Kálmán (Zeneakadémia), Kauser József (Szent István Bazilika), Lechner Ödön (Szent László téri templom), Pecz Samu (Szilágyi Dezső téri templom), Quittner Zsigmond (Gresham-palota), Schulek Frigyes (Halászbástya), Zrumeczky Dezső (Kós Károly téri kapu) …
